An application for a marriage license may be obtained from the town in which either the bride or groom resides. If both applicants are from out of state then they apply in the town where the marriage will take place. A witness is required and must be 18 years of age or older. Proof of residency is required such as driver’s license, passport, county I.D. or birth certificate. The fee is $28.00. There is a 3 day waiting period from the time the couple applies and the license is issued. Then the license is good for 30 days. If a divorce occurred a copy of the divorce decree should be presented. After the marriage takes place the town where the marriage occurred would hold the license and that is where you would obtain a certified copy.

To obtain domestic partner status, a couple would have to share a residence and show proof of joint financial status or property ownership or designation of the partner as the beneficiary in a retirement plan or will. The law will enable a domestic partner to serve as next of kin and to gain access to medical information about a sick or injured partner. Couples wishing to register a domestic partnership must be opposite-sex couples 62 years of age or older.
